Join us on Saturday, April 2 2022 for a free three-hour workshop where you will write, shoot and edit your own PSA (Public Service Announcement) for the Just Drive PSA Contest.

This is a workshop for prospective students and their families to connect with our faculty, students,  admissions, and tour our brand new facilities, including our Communication studios, editing room, and newsroom.

About the Workshop

The University of New Haven's Communication, Film, & Media Studies Department is honored to partner with FOX61 as part of the Just Drive PSA Contest in partnership with Impact Teen Drivers against distracted driving. With access to University of New Haven's state-of-the-art production facilities, participants will receive first-hand training on script writing, camera equipment, voice-over production and editing software to create high production value PSA’s.

The workshops will be taught by University of New Haven's Practitioner-in-Residence and filmmaker, Nicki Chavoya. University of New Haven Film and TV students will train and support participants as well as participate in the workshops to have an opportunity complete the workshop with a professional, high production value PSA (Public Service Announcement) ready to submit.

Tom Garrett, Chair, Communication, Film, and Media Studies Department will supervise and provide additional support and access to resources, world-class facilities and equipment which include University of New Haven’s TV studio and editing suites, located at the Laurel Vlock Convergent Media Center.

Tom Garrett is a producer of independent feature films and a founding partner of Circa Films, a sales and distribution company engaged in production and international distribution of independent feature films. Over a 20-year period Tom has been credited as a producer on 14 feature films. He has intimate knowledge of the legal and financial issues involved in feature film production, having produced, directed and delivered films to the international marketplace. He has also served as a consultant on production issues, budgets, financing, guilds and unions, and legal affairs on projects ranging from low-budget independents to studio-level pictures. Tom's films have screened at many prestigious film festivals worldwide, including Berlin, Cannes, Florence, Rotterdam and Toronto.

A Career Coaching Discussion
on the balance between being an artist & entrepreneur and how to get your business affairs together while remaining creative and inspired.

Kayra J. Clouden, also known as KayraJay, is an Artist from St. Croix, U.S Virgin Islands currently based in Atlanta, GA. Since graduating from the University of New Haven in 2018 with a B.A. in Digital Media and B.S. in T.V/Video Production, Kayra has curated a unique career between the entertainment realms of television and digital media. 

Kayra’s most notable contributions is her role as Associate Producer across Viacom CBS’ hit franchise show, Love and Hip-Hop, as well as VH1’s Family Reunion & VH1’s Couples Retreat, former Development Assistant at MTV/VH1, & former Associate Producer at Jezebel (G/O Media). Independently, Kayra serves as Creator and Executive Producer of the award-winning digital series ADULTIN’ on YouTube and has worked on a few other digital series as well.

When Kayra is not creating for television or digital platforms, you can find her pursuing a slew of other creative ventures including music, art, modeling, public speaking, acting, photography, DJ-ing, traveling around the world and more.


3:15pm - 4:00pm "We Make Your Story Relevant" with Antonio McDonald, KUAMP

KUAMP pronounced (Kee yamp) is a creative production studio with over 20 years of integrated production experience. Led by University of New Haven Alum, Antonio McDonald, the KUAMP team is made up of award-winning artists, most notably recognized for creating engaging content for multi-platforms, including television, film, digital, mobile, radio, and out of home. Recent clients include Google, Viacom, Adidas, Lipton, Nike, MTV and more.

4:30pm – 6:00pm Screening: Footprints, a film by Saiful Islam Mannu (University of New Haven Alum) Location: Bergami Innovation Center, room 307
